Getting Started
Do I need any experience to join? Not at all! Absolute beginners are not just welcome — they are our favorite. Our Mahjong 101 Lesson Series is designed specifically for people who have never touched a tile before. We start from scratch and take you step by step through everything you need to know.
How many lessons do I need before I can play on my own? We always recommend a minimum of 3 lessons to have a full grasp of the game and to be able to play confidently without an instructor. By the end of your third lesson you will be ready to join open play, leagues and events on your own!
What do I need to bring? Nothing at all! We provide everything including tiles, mats, tables, racks and handouts for you to take home. Just bring yourself and your enthusiasm! 🎀
What is the NMJL card and do I need one? The National Mah Jongg League card is updated every year and lists all the hands you can win with. You will need one to play American Mahjong. We sell official cards at our lessons for $20 each. Please do not purchase cards from Amazon as those are not the official version and are considered fakes. You don't need to purchase the card at your first lesson but you will need it by your second!
Lessons
Where do lessons take place? We offer lessons at our studio in Calabasas at the Erewhon Shopping Center, as well as private in-home lessons where we come to you! We bring absolutely everything so all you need to provide is the space.
How many people can join a lesson? Our in-home private lessons accommodate up to 8 people. Our studio lessons have limited spots available, so we recommend booking early!
Do you offer evening lessons? Yes! We offer both daytime and evening lesson options to fit your busy schedule.
How much do lessons cost? Studio lessons are available through our Mahjong 101 Intro Series Bundle. Private in home lessons are $75 per person per lesson. We always recommend booking a 3 lesson series for the best learning experience!
Can I book a private lesson for my group? Absolutely! Private in-home lessons are perfect for groups of friends, family gatherings, bachelorette parties and more. For groups larger than 8, please email us for a quote. Reach out to us at 818mahj@gmail.com to book your private session.
Events & Open Play
What is open play? Open play is a drop-in session where players of all levels come together to play Mahjong in a fun, relaxed setting. No instruction is needed, just show up and play! It's a great way to meet new people and practice your game.
Do I need to know how to play to attend an event? Most of our events are open to all levels. We always indicate on the event listing whether any prior experience is required. When in doubt just reach out and we'll point you in the right direction!
How do I find out about upcoming events? The best way to stay in the loop is to join our mailing list at 818mahj.com, follow us on Instagram @818Mahj and check our Event Calendar regularly. Our events fill up fast so signing up for the mailing list gives you first access!
Leagues
What is the 818 MAHJ League? Our league is a 3 week mini-series of Mahjong play where the same group of players meets week after week for tournament style play. It's a wonderful way to build your skills, meet consistent playing partners and become a real part of the 818 MAHJ community.
Are there different league options? Yes! We offer both morning and evening league sessions to fit your schedule. Keep an eye on our Event Calendar for upcoming league dates.
What level do I need to be to join a league? We recommend having completed at least our Mahjong 101 Lesson Series before joining a league. If you're not sure whether you're ready just reach out and we'll help you figure out the best next step!
Private Parties & Events
Can you host a Mahjong event at my home or venue? Absolutely! We love bringing the 818 MAHJ experience to you. We provide everything including tiles, mats, tables, chairs, racks, cards and full instruction and setup. All you need to provide is the space!
What occasions are private events perfect for? Birthday parties, bachelorette parties, girls nights, baby and bridal showers, holiday parties, corporate events, school fundraisers and neighborhood gatherings — really any occasion where you want to do something fun and unique!
